Cordele police search for arsonist

CORDELE, GA (WALB)- Cordele police are looking for an arsonist who broke into a home and set it on fire.

The house in the 800 block of 15th Avenue was set on fire early Sunday morning.

Police say a man kicked in the side door and set fires in three places that did extensive damage.

The owner was out of town and nothing was taken.

Cops are looking for a bald, black man seen wearing a brown jacket and carrying a book bag.

Southwest Georgia's drought is officially over

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- According to the National Drought Mitigation Center, the drought for Southwest Georgia is officially over. 

Due to recent heavy rain fall and cooler temperatures, the National Drought Mitigation Center has now said that Southwest Georgia is not in a drought condition of any sort.

We were previously classified from D0, abnormally dry, to D2, which means a severe drought.

Crisp sweeps way to State Quarterfinals, other area baseball scores

CORDELE, GA (WALB)- The Crisp County Cougars are the only team left carrying the torch for Southwest Georgia in the Class AAAA playoffs.

They made sure that torch would make it one more round Wednesday.

Robert Tyler and the Cougars made quick work of the Statesboro Blue Devils in Game 1, 12-2 in five innings.

In Game 2, Landon Whitman was dealing on the mound, not allowing a run or hit over 3 innings of work.

The Cougars jumped on SHS early again on their way to a 13-1 win in five innings.

Former Wilcox sheriff to serve 10 years

MACON, GA (WALB)- Information from the U. S. Attorney's Office-

Former Wilcox County Sheriff Stacy Bloodsworth was sentenced to 10 years in prison for assaulting an inmate inside the Wilcox County Jail and for conspiring to cover up the assault. 

Four other people have also been sentenced for their roles in the same assault and cover-up.

Mortgage business is good for Uncle Sam

WASHINGTON (AP) - Mortgage giant Freddie Mac earned $4.6 billion from January through March, helped by a stronger housing market.

The government-controlled company has now turned a profit in its past six quarters. It paid a dividend of $7 billion to the U.S. Treasury from its first-quarter earnings and requested no additional federal aid.

The earnings compared with net income of $577 million in the first quarter of 2012.

CAMILLA, GA (WALB)- A 99-year old retired school teacher in Camilla is leaving a legacy of education. Ruby Sullivan established a scholarship at Valdosta State University. That makes her one of the "People Who Make A Difference."

In 1932, Ruby Sullivan graduated from Valdosta State. She spent years paying off her college debt and hopes to create an easier path for future educators. Ruby Sullivan retired after more than 60 years teaching school.

Special Report: South Georgia Ax Men

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB)- The History Channel has a hit show, Ax Men, who retrieve logs from the bottoms of rivers. One of the teams on the show is from right here in South Georgia.

The murky water of the Suwannee River is where "the Dreadknots" make their living.

The men pull valuable century-old logs from the floor of the river. Dave Stone is known as "The Kracken,"  the expert SCUBA diver.

"It's a treasure hunt every day, you never know what you're going to find, what you're going to run into. So it's exponentially harder,"  Stone said.
